This book is number two in the Temperance Brennan series. I wasn’t completely sold on the series from book one, but went to book two for another shot. Didn’t work. The characters smooth out a bit in this installment, they are a bit more likeable, but the story itself has an uncomfortable, unfinished edge to it. The narrative floats and doesn’t grab, the plot moves forward in awkward spurts. The writing also leans to the gory side - books based on gruesome murders and autopsies tend to do that - but there wasn’t a lot of balance to the macabre. Just not my thing. The narrator for the audio book is decent. I had read the first two novels out of sequence. This was actually my fourth. I found I liked Ms. Reich’s books and decided to start reading in order. Being a forensic anthropologist by profession, her books are full of scientific details. By bringing her professional career into her novels, Ms. Reichs brings interesting forensics to life.Dr. Tempe Brennan splits her time between the Southern U.S. and Quebec. She is so focused on her work and daughter, her personal life has taken a back seat. It’s interesting to see if something will evolve between her and a fellow colleague.The story revolves mainly around serial killing which seems to center around a zealous cult. If true, why? There’s a secondary forensic story which is woven around a characterwho died in the late 1800’s. I would have liked this secondary story shortened or eliminated and the connection to the primary woven differently. I didn’t find the connection that strong. It would have shortened the novel a bit which would have been fine.At any rate, the author provides a nicely written novel, complete with enough twists to make it worth your while.
